The Sideways Scarf – as you may have guessed from the name – is knit lengthwise using 2 contrasting yarns. For ours, we used 2 hanks each of two new yarns from Noro – Maiko and Yuzen. Maiko is a DK-weight blend of almost equal parts silk, mohair, and wool in a range of bright solids. Yuzen is also a DK-weight blend but mostly wool with silk and a little mohair. It’s a multi-colored yarn that’s more typical of Noro yarns.
The Sideways Scarf has great texture and depth. It looks different on both sides because each yarn takes its turn as the prominent one. It can be knit just as we’ve done, or the technique can be used to create any number of scarves, wraps – even blankets!
For beginner knitters, we’re offering a class on The Sideways Scarf on Monday, December 8 and 15. You’ll learn how to knit the pattern while making a swatch for your scarf, to measure the gauge, and to calculate the number of stitches to cast on. You’ll also discuss the variations for the pattern while getting a start on your own version.
The pattern is free with your yarn purchase. (If you’re ordering online, please request the pattern in the comments section.) The Sideways Scarf can be knit with any yarn in any gauge – you’ll return to it again and again!
