This is my first lace project. I’ve knit lace before, but only swatches. Then I was looking at the Sheep Shop Sheep 3 yarn and it occurred to me to give lace a try.
I chose Fiber Trend’s Flower Basket Scarf and Shawl pattern because its designer, Evelyn Clark, is one of lace knitters favorites and I figured there must be a good reason. There is. The pattern contains options for multiple gauges and sizes and is written clearly. The lace pattern is written out in words and there is a chart, which is helpful for new lace knitters.
For some, the pattern might be easy to memorize, but my mind doesn’t work that way. I relied on the chart and used sticky notes to keep my place. I learned quickly I would spare myself frustration by checking my work often. Knitting this scarf took more attention than most of my projects, but it was a lot of fun to see the pattern come together and to see it grow.
I knit the sport weight scarf-sized version, so I only needed one hank of the Sheep 3 yarn. Two hanks would make the small shawl and three hanks would make the large shawl. Sheep 3 continues to be one of my favorite yarns. The silk/wool blend feels great to knit and the colors are spectacular.
If you’re new to lace knitting, I highly recommend the Flower Basket Scarf and Shawl. And regardless of what you’re knitting, I suggest you consider the Sheep 3 yarn. It’s a real pleasure to knit.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing your feedback on the pattern & yarn.
It is beautiful and so is the what looks like a quilt behind it.
Craig, it’s beautiful! It’s a great alternative to the rectangular scarf and it’s not too big to be frightening. I love lace and am hoping to do more soon. I might have to give this project a try!
Thanks for your compliments! I’m really happy with it, and I think I might use that pattern again, but with a different yarn.
Laura made the quilt, Gail. I’m glad you like it!
