After lots of emailing and planning, Franklin and I met at the beginning of last Friday’s Stitch Party. I’d seen his photograph, so it wasn’t a case of putting a name with a face, but it was certainly good to talk face to face. The room was full of fans wanting Franklin to sign their copy of It Itches, so we kept our greetings short and Franklin got to work.
A few people arrive as early as 3 o’clock to be sure they got to talk with Franklin. The room starting filling as afternoon became evening.
And then there was time for knitting and chatting and snacking. Spool’s first birthday was being celebrated next door, and there were several missions to get the cupcakes they were serving. Before we knew it, the night was over.
Early the next morning, Franklin returned along with one or two of us from the night before, to teach his Introduction to the History, Methods and Styles of Lace Knitting. The class was equal parts knitting lace and hearing tales of its origin. He had gorgeous samples he’d knit and historical photographs to share. Franklin was patient and encouraging, and gave us lots of advice for next steps.
After class, Franklin gathered his things and I drove him to 30th Street Station to catch a train to New York. It was a whirlwind visit and we had a blast! Now we just need to figure out when he’ll be back.
Thanks to everyone who came to Stitch Party and who took Franklin’s class! Hope to see you again soon!

Sure wish I could have been there…I’m just realizing lace may be my new best friend!
It’s always so much fun to have Franklin around! He teaches a great class on how to photograph your knitted items, too (hint, hint)…I am always available to be his personal assistant, airport ride and lodging-provider.
Yes, Franklin was telling me about his photography class. I think I’m going to have to take you up on your offer and have him back!
