Spud & Chloë Hoot Hat Pattern

by Craig on August 2, 2009

Everyone we show the Spud & Chloe knitting patterns to stops at the Hoot Hat. It’s wide-eyed expression, textured crown, and fun side tassels, immediately makes you want to see it on your own little one.

The Hoot Hat was designed by Susan B. Anderson who’s known for her adorable hat patterns (see her first book Itty-Bitty Hats) and for charming designs for babies (see her second book Itty Bitty Nursery). Susan chose Spud & Chloe Outer yarn for the Hoot Hat, so it knits up quickly and is warm on cold winter days. The eyes and beak are stitched with Spud & Chloe Sweater yarn, which is thinner than Outer and so is good for the details.

For our own version, we used the same main colors of Outer yarn and contrast colors of Sweater yarn. And yet, you can see that our Hoot Hat has a very different personality. To me, his shaped eyes seem a little wiser. The eyes present a great opportunity to individualize your Hoot Hat. Imagine a flock of Hoot Hats for your kids, nephews and nieces, or little neighbors!

The Hoot Hat is sized from 0 to 6 months, which is what we knit, to 2 to 5 years. We heard plenty of discussions about sizing it for adults, so don’t be surprised if you encounter some extra-large Hoot Hats in town this winter. Be sure to send us photos of what you come up with – preferably being modeled on their recipient!

This is the best hat EVER. I have been trying to purchase the pattern, locally, with no luck. I have a grandson due in November. This will be perfect. AND, we are all owl lovers.
I am SO impressed with Spud and Chloe. One of the best lines I have seen in ages.

I love the new Spud and Chloe patterns. I have already made the bumble up scarf and the sidecar jacket. I am looking forward to coming in for another pattern.

Barb, I agree that Spud & Chloe is one of the best yarn lines to come around in a while. I’m really enjoying their yarns and patterns.

Erinn, bring in or send us photos of your finished Spud & Chloe projects. Would love to see them!

This hat is driving me nuts! I don’t know what it is, but when I start the crown shaping part, my knitting is no longer in st st. It’s suddenly in garter. I followed the directions to a T or so I thought. I’m making the 1-2 year size. I knit 28 sts and then placed the remaining ones on a holder, but everything goes wonky once I start the Dec Row. Any thoughts?

To stay in stockinette, just make sure that you are purling the purls and knitting the knits. It sounds like you’re knitting on the right and wrong side, which is resulting in stockinette.

I have a question in regards to the instructions for the hoot hat, and was hoping someone would be able to help me out. The pattern reads Rep Dec Row every 4th row once, then every RS row once, working 1 less st between dec. 5(6,7,8)sts Does this mean I dec once on the 4th row, then purl a row, then dec a row then knit 4 rows and dec again until I have the correct remaining stitches? Clarification from someone who has knitted this would be great. I know I am just not seeing the obvious here.

I have this figured out now. Thanks.

I have the same question as Tory, but haven’t figured out the obvious yet. Maybe it’s the fact that I can’t have more than 5 minutes to knit, but I have pulled out the Crown Shaping 4 times now…

I have the same question as Tory and Adrienne. I just don’t understand the wording. How do you rep dec row EVERY 4th row ONCE (as it’s written it sounds like if you do something EVERY 4th row, you are doing it more than once). Can someone clarify please?!

I am having the same problem with the hoot hat as you other folks…I hope someone posts a clairfication…writing out instructions for each row would be ideal. Please, someone who knows how to do this hat, please help!!!

thanks!

The wording is confusing…I made the 0-6 month size, so it might be a little different, but I just repeated the dec row ONCE (on the fourth row) and then decreased ONCE on the next RS row. It worked for me. I don’t know if that helps at all.

The wording IS confusing. 4th row from what? From the current row (the first dec row)? If so does that mean we k 2 rows, then do a dec row until we reach (I’m making the 1-2 year old) 7 sts? THEN P the last row? Or do we simply keep rep the dec row until we reach 7 sts? This seems to make more sense, but I’m no expert! Help!
Tory since you’ve figured this out, would you be kind enough to share? I sure would appreciate it!
Thanks everyone. :)

Valerie I am having the same problem. Im lost at the crown shaping. Did you figure it out? If so can you post your ideas please? Thank you

Hi there – I am also confused about the Front crown shaping section of the pattern. What does ‘working 1 less st between dec’ mean? (K1 k2tog instead of K2 k1tog).
I am making the 1-2 years size hat. I ended up with the correct 21 stitches after the first dec row. Then I did the following:
purl 1 row
knit 1 row
purl 1 row
Dec Row (assuming this was the “4th row once” section)
purl 1 row
I now have 16 stitches.
I assume my next row would be a regular Dec Row (the “every RS row once” part of the pattern), but this would not bring me to 7 sts (what I am to end up with)?? Any help appreciated!
