Little Colonnade and Tosh Sock

by Craig on June 2, 2010

When Stephen West of Westknits visited last month with his trunkshow, I was really taken by his design Little Colonnade. I had been knitting another of his designs but took it out and cast on for this one.

Little Colonnade design by Stephen West

I don’t often knit from charts, and this was a good one to get me back in the swing. I used post-it notes to mark my place and checked each row as I finished it for the first few repeats. I don’t have the best memory, but even I got the hang of the pattern and was able to move along more easily as I went. The pattern also includes written directions, which I was glad to have if I needed them. As it turned out that I didn’t.

It’s the edging that really attracted me to this design. It’s so orderly and architectural. I don’t often wear scarves – especially ones with lace – but I thought this was one that I might.

This was my third project with Madelinetosh Tosh Sock yarn. I don’t often knit with the same yarns more than once, so I’m surprised that I keep coming back to it. But I do. The colors are fantastic and it’s really soft – in the hank, as you knit it, and when you wear it. Eventually, I’m going to knit myself a sweater in Tosh Sock. In fact, a lightweight cardigan might be the perfect summer project.

You only need 355 yards of fingering weight yarn for Little Colonnade. So that’s one hank of Tosh Sock yarn or two hanks of Koigu KPPPM yarn. Of course, if you have more yarn, it’s easy to knit a larger version. It’s a wonderful design for a multi-colored yarn like Koigu KPPPM, too, because the pattern is bold and won’t get lost in color changes. Whatever you choose, I think Little Colonnade is a pattern you’ll enjoy knitting and wearing.
