Fisherman’s Cowl

by Craig on February 12, 2012

UPDATE, 2/17/12: I finished the Fisherman’s Cowl last night. It’s a really fun knit and goes quickly once you get the rhythm. Final measurements are 32 inch circumference and 13 inch length with 2 balls of Karuta.

Inspired by the Fisherman’s Scarf, here’s the Fisherman’s Cowl. I’m not finished yet, so I can’t say what the final dimensions will be. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 inches in circumference and 12 inches tall.

FISHERMAN’S COWL

MATERIALS
2 balls of Noro Karuta yarn.
Size #10 24-inch circular needle.
Stitch marker.

GAUGE
3.5 stitches to the inch in St st

NOTE
To knit the stitch in the row below:
1. Insert your right needle into the stitch below the next one on the left needle;
2. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and draw through like you normally would;
3. Take the stitch off the left needle with the new stitch on your right needle.

To purl the stitch in the row below:
1. From the back of the work, insert your right needle into the stitch below the next one on the left needle;
2. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and draw through like you normally would to purl;
3. Take the stitch off the left needle with the new stitch on your right needle.

In both cases, it will look like you’re going to drop the stitch coming off the left needle, but if done correctly, it’ll be caught by the new stitch.

PATTERN
CO 100 sts.

Set-up Round: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end.

Round 1 *Knit next stitch in the row below, p1; repeat from * to end.

Round 2 *K1, purl next st in the row below; repeat from * to end.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there’s only enough yarn left in the second ball to bind off. BO loosely in k1, p1 and weave in ends.

VARIATION
For a long cowl that you can double, use a 40-inch circular needle and cast on 200 stitches. The cowl will be twice as wide and half as tall.
