Gretel is a tank with waist shaping and cowl neck designed by Julie Weisenberger of Cocoknits. Like many of Julie’s designs, you cast on at the waist and knit in the round up to the armholes. At that point, the front and back are worked separately. The shoulder seams are sewn and you’re done!
I used Habu’s Cotton Gima yarn, which Julie suggests. It’s a 100% cotton tape that feels like paper. You knit on a larger needle than might normally be used so it’s definitely a good idea to swatch; the yarn acts very differently afterwards.
I love the lightness of the finished fabric. You only need 2 to 4 balls of Cotton Gima, depending on the size you knit. The pattern is written for six sizes from 33-35″ bust to 52-54″ bust.
Gretel’s perfect in summer over a tank or tee, and a great layering piece the rest of the year!
Julie and Takako Ukei, the owner of Habu Textiles, will be here with trunk shows and to teach on Saturday, June 9. Please join us!
